ES2 Metamorphic Rocks - Metamorphic Microstructures #15
Inclusion patterns in garnet.
This garnet porphyroblast has fine quartz inclusions in its core, presumably acquired when the garnet grew over the rock matrix, which at the time had a much finer grain size. At a later stage mass transfer in the rock matrix was more effective, the garnet grew without inclusions and the matrix coarsened substantially.

Field of view is 2.5 mm across.
Kyanite-staurolite-garnet schist, Eastern Alps. Sample DW-0524.
