The Image Store is a collection of digitized photographs of rocks and geological features for use in teaching. At present we have the following collections appropriate for use by schools:
- Rocks of NW Scotland
Sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks from an area of classic geology, seen in panoramic view, outcrop, hand specimen and under the microscope - Rocks in hand specimen
A representative set of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks from Oxford's teaching collections - Rocks in the Field
A set of photographs of common rock types and geological features as you would see them in the landscape or in outcrop - Rocks under the Microscope
A variety of rocks photographed in thin section - very thin slices at high magnification
This site also holds image sets suitable for university
undergraduate use: go to the Teaching page
to see what's publicly accessible.
Many of these are searchable slide shows (using jAlbum web photo gallery software).
See the following for useful examples:

- Atlas of metamorphic minerals in thin section (a work in progress)
