            Fossiliferous
         limestone; Silurian, USA

This photograph is of a bedding plane packed with fossil
remains of many different species, including brachiopods
(lamp shells), crinoids (sea lilies) and trilobites. Most of
these have shells or skeletons made of calcium carbonate,
and they sit in a cream-coloured matrix of very fine calcium
         carbonate mud.
